Julep: Jewel Heist Mystery Box

Wednesday, September 17, 2014

I was absolutely excited for the Jewel Heist Mystery Box from Julep. Fifty lucky people would win all 12 birthstone polishes which includes the October, November and December polishes which have yet to be revealed. On top of that one lucky winner would win sapphire and diamond earrings. How cool is that?

Granted I know my chances of winning were slim however I figured I'd break my no-buy since it was my birthday AND I had two $15 off promo codes from referrals which dropped the princes down from $24.99 to only $9.99. I also figured for $10 I might as well stock up for Christmas since I have three daughters, three sisters-in-law, two mothers-in-law (mom and step-mom), my mother and an adult niece.

So in BOTH boxes I received these items:

Original retail price Current retail price
Julep Lip Vernis - Peony $18.00 $5.99
(it's been on sale for $5.99 since at least July 9, 2013.)
Night Night Overnight Repair for Hands $48 $19.99
(It's been on sale at least since December 5, 2013 for $36 however the current price is more recent.)
Nadia $14 $4.99
(On sale since August 6, 2013 though the current price is more recent.)
Padma $14 $11.20 (Maven price)
Francis $14 $11.20 (Maven price)
Faye $14 $11.20 (Maven price)
Overall box value $122 $64.57

The fine print DOES include the disclaimer that polish or product overlap may occur and I was prepared for that as I had intended this to be gifts so it wasn't that big of a deal. What I feel cheated on were the facts that 1) the boxes were identical despite weighing slightly different at 1.2656 lbsand 1.2738 lbs. 2) The "full retail value" is a bit of a scam since the items in the box have been on sale for a long time now (some as far back as July 2013). Yes the fine print also states that the value would be based on the full retail value of the items however again to me it was a bit of a scam since three of the items have been on sale (essentially on clearance) since July 2013!
Offer expires on 9/14/2014 at 11:59pm PT, or while supplies last. Purchase of multiple Jewel Heist Mystery Boxes may result in polish or product overlap. Offer may not be combined with any other promotional offer or discount (e.g. Maven 20% discount). No exchanges or returns are possible on Mystery Box, individual items, or add-ons. Estimated full retail value is at least $100.00 for all Jewel Heist Mystery boxes. Taxes vary by location.

The 51 prize winners will be randomly selected from Mystery Box orders placed 9/8/2014 through 9/14/2014. Prizes may ship separately from Mystery Box order. Winners will be notified via email from the address in the account.

I'm so disappointed in Julep because I feel that the Jewel Heist Mystery Boxes should have 1) contained jewel toned polishes or products and 2) be more current instead of filled with clearance/sale items. This is why it feels a bit of a scam or bait and switch since the items are old. I have the Peony lip gloss from when they first released lip glosses back in 2011 or 2012!! It's a hot mess of a gloss.

As for the products themselves. I'm not sure if I plan on giving these items to family members at Christmas or not because I can't in good conscience give them something that's on clearance for $5 or a tacky color lip gloss.

Edit: BTW - the Peony lip gloss was from the July 2012 American Beauty subscription box. I did originally get it back in 2012 and it's among my least favorite lip glosses. Images below taken July 2012.

The more I think about it the more furious I become because Julep sent out to customers a TWO YEAR OLD lip gloss that's been on clearance since July 2013! GROSS!

These were taken September 17, 2014. I should dig out my original Peony so you can see how gross it is after it exploded. I think I held onto it though it's possible I did toss it.

Edit: September 22, 2014

I did some digging and found another blogger's post from July 12, 2012.

Her image reversed by me.
If you received PEONY with the numbers 42389 then you received a gloss from the July 2012 American Beauty lot.
