Birchbox vs Ipsy: My October subscriptions

Friday, October 11, 2013

Another Birchbox vs Ipsy comparison, this time my accounts on both Birchbox and Ipsy have updated with the items I'm scheduled to receive. Keep in mind until I get my actual boxes the items I receive may be different.

Birchbox - October 2013
  1. Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish™
  2. Liz Earle Pure Muslin Cloths
  3. Alison Raffaele Reality Base Foundation
  4. POP Beauty Aqua Lacquer
  5. ChapStick® Hydration Lock
My thoughts: Well, it looks interesting. Ok, honestly, first thought was "am I ever going to escape POP Beauty?" LOL Least it's not something I've already received from Ipsy. That's the "trouble" with having multiple subscriptions with various companies, one risks getting duplicate items. As for the Chapstick, I have several lip balms including from NOYA (which I love the Vanilla one) so I'll keep this one and eventually use it. Never heard of Liz Earle so those two items I'm looking forward to trying. As for the Alison Raffaele foundation, well, I'm picky on my foundations so hopefully this is #3 which looks from the photos on Birchbox to be a yellow undertone.

Ipsy - October 2013
  1. Zoya Nail Polish, $8
  2. Bella Terra Mineral Cosmetics Mineral Shimmers, $14.99
  3. Buxom Full-On™ Lip Polish in Dolly, $9
  4. Ole Henriksen truth serum™ collagen booster, 0.25 oz; value $12
  5. Sexy Hair Blow Dry Gel, 1.4 oz; retail $6
My thoughts: Remember what I said above is that one of the risk of having multiple subscriptions is the risk of getting repeat items? The Ole Henriksen Truth Serum is one of those duplicates for me. I've used it a few times, probably no more than a half dozen times but I think I'm over estimating how many times I've used it. I'll keep it and probably for my Secret Santa exchange. I also have three sisters-in-law so I should put together little beauty boxes for them for Christmas.

Zoya nail polish and the Bella Terra items were two of the items on my wish list. I have no qualms with the Buxom lip gloss but I know I won't use it more than a few times. The only thing I don't want is the Sexy Hair Blow Dry Gel. I don't frequently blow dry my hair. The upside is that this may NOT be what I'm actually getting because Ipsy has said on Facebook that some accounts experienced a glitch and are showing the "Core Bag" rather than a personalized one. Considering all three of my daughters and myself are showing the "Core Bags" we're hoping that this is a glitch. On flip side to that I rather have the "Core Bag" than get a bag with the Wet 'n' Wild shadow palette since I already have that or the Coastal Scents brush. I really hope that I get the Be Delectable lotion though if not I'll order probably it off Kohl's website.

Update: Looks like I was among those that experienced the glitch. Here's what my account now shows:
  1. Zoya Nail Polish, $8
  2. Bella Terra Mineral Cosmetics Mineral Shimmers, $14.99
  3. Coastal Scents Medium Shadow Brush, $2.49
  4. Nourish Organic Deeply Nourishing Coconut & Argan Body Lotion, 8 oz ; retail $11.99 (if it's a 2 oz tube then value would be $3) 1 oz, value $1.25
  5. Sexy Hair Spray Clay Texturizing Spray Clay, 1.4 oz; retail $6
Ok, so my account was affected by the glitch and honestly I rather have the Core Bag to this one. Why? Because I rather have the Buxom lip gloss ($9) to a Coastal Scent brush ($2.49). This brush I'll give to one of the girls because I know I won't use it since I have a ton of brushes and granted you can never have too many brushes but I still rather have the lip gloss.

Overall, I have to say this month I'm more excited for my Birchbox than my Ipsy bag. I just got my tracking for Birchbox and it's expected to arrive on October 16 and I have yet to get my tracking from Ipsy.

  1. I normally don't complain with my Ipsy bag I am hugely against complaining because 90% of time I am REALLY HAPPY. but my glam room updated and I think this is the first time I am going to be eerrhh. Ok, I am getting the loose pigment that's fine, voya ok that's fine, then here comes the EGGRGG if that makes any sence. Costal Scents brush, big hair clay gel grab, la fresh again, I not thrilled for this months bag at all, going to have to do some major swapping

    1. I'm getting the exact same bag and I'm really disappointed. I also don't like to complain about my Ipsy products, because I'll give anything a go, but I have personal qualms with Zoya, I hate La Fresh products, and I'm so tired of Sexy Hair products. I really hope next month is better.

  2. I have literally never been disappointed with my bag as much as I am with this one and I've had my sub about 8 months. I've always had two things in my bag that I like but the last few I've gotten none of the expensive items(Urban decay, benetint or buxom lip gloss!) I HAVE LIPSTICK CHECKED AND EYE SHADOW UNCHECKED! I got the loose eye shadow and I absolutely hate how messy loose items are. If I get them as sample I throw them away. I'm really upset. I wish I had gotten something better than what I got. I would've been fine getting the lip liner I got from last time!

    1. since the eye shadow is the same price as the lip gloss, how are you not getting an expensive item??

  3. My account updated and I'm not happy with the new results. I rather have the Core Bag. A $2.49 brush compared to a $9 lip gloss? Yeah, no thanks. I'm seriously considering saying good-bye to my Ipsy account at the end of November which would make my two years being with them. My first bag was their first bag and so I think two years is enough. Tired of the drama with them over the new so-called IpsyMatch, the points system, the crappy shipping, the wide range of values to items so some people get a high value bag while others get a low value bag. I'm so over it. I think Ipsy needs someone who can sit down and go through each value and put together bags that have similar bag values (+/- $5).

  4. I cancelled my Ipsy after last month and so far am not regretting that decision. But Bella Terra is the "mall kiosk" company that I buy my mineral foundation from here in Atlanta, are they related to MicaBeauty (formerly MicaBella), which I know is also one of the popular mall brands in other places?

  6. This will be my second month with Ipsy, but I might have to make the switch to Birchbox. The point system looks fantastic!

  7. You should try Blush Mystery Beauty Box. It's $25 a month, and I've had it for three months now. I also have a subscription to Ipsy and Blush blows Ipsy out of the water with quality and product size. I do get doubles sometimes, like that stupid POP lip crayon, but I'm just going to go ahead and gift those.

  8. how is the Liz Earle? possible review? I didn't receive it in my birchbox but I've been wanting to try it for awhile. I'm considering buying it off the site
